Bill Dormer is a respected and trusted executive sales leader with in-depth strategic, international sales and marketing, business development and commercial experience across global maritime markets.
He has an MBA from Cranfield School of Management, a CIM Diploma in Marketing and a BSc in Ship Science (Naval Architecture) from the University of Southampton. He is a recent committee member for ADS (Aerospace, Defence & Security Trade Association) on DESG (Defence Export Strategy Group – SME Committee) which represents the views of the trade body to the UK Government.
Bill has in-depth experience of naval defence, commercial & leisure marine sectors, with further experience in the offshore oil & gas sector and across a wide range of industrial fluid control applications.
He has significant new business development experience in the design, development and manufacture of engineered products (mechanical valves/ hydraulic applications/ propulsion/ marine coatings).
Bill was Defence Sales Director at Hale Hamilton Valves Limited for most of the 21 years he worked for the company between 1996 and 2017. Responsible for setting the company’s strategy in its defence business in line with corporate strategic objectives, he delivered defence new business, introduced new product initiatives into international defence sector programmes and delivered three-fold growth in a £multi-million turnover in a competitive and declining market.
He managed defence sales direct to Prime Contractors, set up and managed a network of sales representatives and distributors to work with defence contractors in naval, aerospace and land sectors worldwide.
In 2010, PA Consulting Group published Bill’s strategic business model in the output document from Shrivenham 2010 “Identifying solutions for defence acquisition” which provided a framework for DSTL to select, prioritise and maximise returns on R&T investment across defence and security.
Between 1994 and 1996 Bill worked as the Manager for Marine Products for the VT Group. With P&L responsibility for the Marine Products Division’s £6 million turnover, Bill set the business unit’s strategies and product business plans in commercial, leisure and naval marine markets.
At Brunton Propellors Ltd, Bill worked as Sales & Marketing Director from 1991 to 1994 with responsibility for all aspects of sales and marketing for the company in commercial, leisure and defence marine sectors. He successfully launched an innovative marine product onto the global marine leisure market with sales growth of more than 200% in 18 months.
From 1984 to 1990 Bill worked as a Technical Sales Representative for Courtaulds Coatings plc (International Paints), based in various locations including the UK, Netherlands, Poland, South Korea (two years) and West Africa. He represented the company in ship repair and new-build yards to supervise steel work preparation and coating of commercial ships and offshore structures. From 1982 to 1984 Bill joined the Courtaulds Coatings’ graduate scheme and received ‘blue chip’ marketing training.
Bill is passionate about sailing and qualified as an RYA skipper aged 17! He has sailed in many parts of the world including crossing the Atlantic with the ARC yacht race in 1988. He has many sailing qualifications including RYS Coastal Skipper, RYA Radio Licence, RYA First Aid, RYA Radar and RYA Sea Survival.
He also recently qualified as a PADI Open Water Diver although he is the first to admit that he would rather be on the water than in it! Diving in the Cathedral Cave in Gozo, Malta converted him to the beauty to be seen beneath the waves.
Bill also loves travel and photography and can be seen on the end of the pier in Dittisham, Devon one weekend every August as he commentates at the annual Regatta which takes place in the village where he grew up.
